Tips for New Pet Owners from Dr. Phil Good

Bringing a new pet home is one of life’s great joys — and one of its bigger adjustments. Whether you’ve just adopted from the Homeless Pets Foundation or picked up a puppy from a breeder, here are the essentials every new pet owner should know.

1. Schedule a vet visit within the first week. Even if your new pet came with a clean bill of health, establishing a relationship with a veterinarian early is crucial. Your vet can set up a vaccination schedule, discuss spay/neuter timing, and catch any issues that might not be obvious to a new owner.

2. Pet-proof your home before they arrive. Puppies and kittens are curious — and fast. Secure electrical cords, move toxic plants out of reach, and make sure trash cans have lids. For rescue animals, be mindful that they may be anxious in a new environment and could chew or scratch things they normally wouldn’t.

3. Invest in routine, not stuff. Your pet doesn’t need the most expensive bed or the fanciest toys. What they need is consistency — regular feeding times, predictable walk schedules, and a quiet space they can call their own. Routine builds trust, especially for rescue animals who may have experienced instability.

4. Be patient with behavioral adjustment. Rescue pets in particular may need weeks or even months to fully settle in. The “3-3-3 rule” is a helpful framework: 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to learn your routine, 3 months to feel truly at home. Don’t judge your new pet’s personality by the first week.

5. Build your support network. Find a vet you trust, connect with a local trainer if needed, and don’t hesitate to reach out to the rescue organization if you have questions. At HPF, we’re always available to our adopters — your success is our success.
